Lesson 47 - Little Clay Monsters

Today our lesson involved working with clay. The children had the opportunity to manipulate air dry clay to make their own creations.

We began  by holding the clay and working with it to see how soft and pliable it was. After kneading it for some time, the children made a small mound shape. This was done by placing the clay into a small bowl with plastic wrap to keep it from sticking. The children stretched the clay by pushing it against the sides of the bowl with their thumbs. We then removed the clay mound from the bowl and placed it on the table.

The children then decorated their clay “monsters” by adding a mouth, ears, nose, etc., either with more clay or with beads. They also used feathers to make hair, mustaches, or earrings to complete their little monsters. The final creations need to dry for a day and then may be painted at the children’s leisure. However, having seen the hard work the children put into their creations, they are beautiful just the way they are.
