Today we used a folding technique to make our pictures. Our inspiration was artist and author Susan Schwake. We began by using a large sheet of paper folded in half. We used acrylic paint and painted only on one side of the paper. We then folded the paper again and rubbed the top sheet to transfer the paint on the opposite side.
When the paper was opened we saw the mirror image of the painting had transferred to the unpainted side. We began the process again, this time folding our paper in the opposite direction. We then again painted only on one side of the paper, partially painting over part of the original, and again folded our paper to transfer the picture to the opposite side.
When the process was complete, we discovered multiple layers of multi-colored paint overlapping, creating a very unique and “cool” effect.
The children enjoyed being able to transfer their paint onto the paper by just folding it and rubbing the paint from one side to the other. It’s always a delightful surprise to discover the end product.
