For our last official summer art class we conducted a science experiment that turned into an artful project, by using milk painting. We began by placing just enough milk to cover the bottom of a shallow plate. Next we added a few drops of food coloring in a cluster in the center of each plate. Lastly the children added a few drops of liquid detergent to the cluster of food coloring.
We watched incredibly as the detergent caused the milk fat to separate, carrying with it the different drops of food coloring. The results was a beautiful color marbling, in the shape of stars and swirls. We then took a piece of white copy paper and gently laid it on top of the colorful swirls. We quickly removed it, and the swirls of colors remained on the paper, creating beautiful patterns.The best and most interesting portion of this 
experimental art project was watching the milk react with the food coloring and the liquid dish detergent. Everyone was in awe of the magical way the milk mixed with the food colors when the detergent was placed into it. The mixture swirled about for some time before the children took it upon themselves to mix up all the colors. We all had a great time with this project.
