Happy Fall!! I hope everyone had a fantastic summer! School has begun and we are getting back into the swing of things. Today was our first official art class of the semester. This year we will be concentrating not only on the great masters but also on fun crafts and lasting masterpieces that each child will create for our art auction this spring.
For our first lesson, we worked on multiple projects. We have one large canvas project which we began in the summer that will serve as an ongoing art project for the semester. This is a depiction of a tree which the children began painting during the summer. They began by doing a light color wash on a large canvas (approx. 5’by 4’ tall). We then drew a large tree and a place for “grass” which the children painted. This was left to dry over the break. Now that we are back, we will be adding multi-colored handprints of each child (even the babies), to our tree to make “leaves”, while also adding some “grass” in the form of cut construction paper on the bottom. The children will also collect real leaves and paste them at the base of the tree to depict a real fall scene. There will also be other goodies added to our picture that the children will come up with in the course of the semester. Today we began by adding some handprint ‘leaves’ to our tree. 
Our other craft today was making butterflies. We briefly talked about monarch butterflies, and their migration to warmer climates. Everyone then made their own butterfly by coloring and decorating a pre-cut butterfly shape. We used markers, pastels, glue and glitter to make our butterflies particularly beautiful. As you can see from the pictures, everyone was very focused on creating a unique and lovely creation.
