Today the children learned about color. The lesson began by showing the children the primary colors (red, yellow, blue) as well as the secondary colors (green, purple, orange). We learned that no other color can be mixed to make a primary color, but primary colors can be mixed to make secondary colors (red+yellow=orange; blue+yellow=green; red+blue=purple). The children mixed primary colors to make secondary colors and other colors as well.
We also learned about black and white, and the role they play in changing the hue of a color.
Some vocabulary words we learned were: “Hue” - the undiluted color in its purest intensity. “Intensity” - brightness or dullness of a color. “Shade” - hue plus black; “Tint” - hue plus white; “Value” lightness and darkness of the hue.
We used stamping tools for texture such as a variety of kitchen utensils (potato mashers, textured pizza cutters, turkey baster, eye droppers, cookie cutters, as well as fruit; pineapple skin, ½ apple, cut star fruit (this was a very interesting stamp and a big hit with all the children).
The children were encouraged to think about springtime while creating their masterpieces.
Everyone enjoyed being “messy with paint”, so much so that some of the toddlers extended the painting to their faces, arms, etc. This was very much a “process” art lesson in that it did not really matter what the final product looked like; the important part was to allow the art process to flow from the children and allow them to discover their individual creative process.
