This weeks’ activities were still focused on Egypt. First, I brought in some books so the children learned about hieroglyphs, the writing method of ancient Egypt. While the Egyptian “alphabet” is extensive, we used a simplified version to make cartouches. Each child used the symbol alphabet to pick sounds related to his or her name. Then using templates I made for them, they traced their name onto real papyrus paper which I purchased.
Some children needed assistance while tracing the symbols. They learned some of the names of the symbols (such as bird, cup, snake, lion, etc), and how the phonetic sound represented a letter or sound in their name. They also learned about papyrus and how the ancient people of Egypt made this writing paper out of reed plants.
Most children were able to independently trace their names and pick out the correct glyph to match the sounds of their name. We also talked about Egyptian history, who was allowed to be a scribe, and writing styles.

When the names were written on papyrus, the cartouche was allowed to dry. The finished cartouche was then mounted on thick posterboard and made into a hanging nameplate for their room.
