LESSON 10 - Splatter Paint On Canvas

Our final lesson of the school year was splatter paint. On three canvases the children used a variety of instruments to “splatter paint”. We used everything from a turkey baster, toothbrushes, small balloons dipped in paint, miniature water squirt guns (which were the favorite method), and even tennis balls dipped in paint. The children proceeded to add paint to each canvas by any method they chose, and the canvases were periodically turned to allow the paint to drip down and create a quilted effect.

The older children created a canvas with a lighter, watercolor type effect, while some of the younger children had fun using move vibrant color for their masterpiece.

The children also had a chance to experiment with paint on photo backing paper which is much smoother than a canvas and yields different results. Here they used paint covered tennis balls and household water squirt bottles as well as “dot” sponges. This exercise allowed the all the children to use large muscle groups as they were standing up, aiming, and depositing the paint on the paper. Also small muscle activity by using the squirt guns and squirt bottles. Hand-eye coordination was important in completing this lesson.
