The children learned about Egyptian customs, art and writing. They were shown books on Egypt and the pharaos. We talked about how important the pharao was in Egyptian life. All children enjoyed making the pharao’s headdress. A template was made for the main part of the headdress and another was made for the decorative stripes and the “snakehead” top. We used bright colored cardboard in contrasting colors. A large stip was added to the back of the main headdress to secure the headdress around the child’s head.
Each child needed to paste strips onto the main piece. The children liked the pasting activity, and many chose to paste the strips horizontally, vertically, and many different ways.
Some older children especially enjoyed this craft and were able to connect the fact that pharao was a king who was very important in the Egyptian culture. They all pretended to be pharao and were very keen on completing their headdresses and wear them around the classroom.
This particular craft required the children to have patience while the appropriate cardboard pieces were cut for them before they were able to complete the headdress. Also focus was required while pasting the pieces together. This craft also sparked imaginative play in the children while they pretended to be pharao. They carried the imaginative play into the rest of their day.
