This week's lesson revolved around a new word for the children, "symmetry". We learned this new word which means regularity, evenness, and in the art world, it is the quality of something that has two sides or halves, that are the same or very close in size shape and position - and for us, also color.
The best way for us to show symmetry was by using a butterfly. Two equally beautiful wings, perfectly symmetrical, equally colorful. We first looked at pictures of butterflies, and talked about how their wings are of the same shape and color. We made butterfly shapes with our hands, also showing how humans are symmetrical. This helped the children visibly understand the word.
Next we began our craft by tracing a butterfly shape on a piece of large sturdy paper. We then cut it out. We folded the paper in half and the children painted their chosen pattern on one half of the wing. Some chose to paint stripes or rainbow patterns, some chose all-over colors, while others chose to paint dots all over the one wing.
When this was done, we folded the butterfly in half, placing the painted half of the wing onto the unpainted half, and we pushed down to transfer the paint over.
When unfolded, each butterfly pattern was unique and beautiful, perfectly realizing the concept of symmetry. The children placed these on the window to dry, and they all looked beautiful.
