This week our lesson consisted of a learning and practice session on how to properly use a variety of brushes. I picked three types of brushes and we began with a tutorial on how to hold and use each one. The first was a rounded thin brush. The children were able to practice making thin, fine lines. Next a larger flat brush, which the children found made bolder, thicker lines. Lastly a fan brush, which as it’s name states, is shaped like an open fan and is mostly used for light brushwork, such as a grassy field, or clouds.
The children used different types of paint also, to see how each brush holds different thickness of paint (watercolor/acrylic). We did not yet use oil paint for the obvious messy reasons; and oil paint is very difficult to get out of clothes and fingers and elbows!
The children practiced with each brush and with each type of paint. This lesson was mainly a practice lesson, with no expectations of a final product. Even so, many children decided to “paint” something to take home.
I'm glad we had this chance to practice our brush strokes.
