Fall is here. It’s time for colorful trees and pumpkins. This lesson ties in the activities the children have been doing in class. They carved a pumpkin to make a jack-o-lantern. We made a resist using chalk, oil pastels, and paint.
First we drew a pumpkins on heavy multi-media paper. Many children traced a round shape and then drew the indentations to make the sections and the stem of the pumpkin. When this was done, they traced the whole pumpkin in colored chalk. This sets up a barrier for the oil pastels, so that the line they traced can later be filled with paint.
Next they colored in their pumpkin with oil pastels. Many children used different colors, such as blue and pink, to make their pumpkins stand out. We had a few psychedelic pumpkins. Lastly, they colored in the background using the oil pastels.
Now I gave the children a choice to keep their picture as it was, or to paint over it with tempera paint, then wipe off the paint after a few minutes with a paper towel. This gives the picture an "old", faded look. Each child opted to paint over their picture, no surprise there. The results were outstanding. the pictures looked faded, but the brightness of the pastel colors still shone through.
