This week with the continuation of Chinese New Year, we made Chinese pellet drums or “Bo Lang Gu” drums. The are usually given to children as toys during festivals, and street vendors use them to draw attention to their wears.
We used two small paper bowls stapled together which the children painted red; the common color of celebratory drums. We then punched a hole on each side, where we tied a piece of string with beads attached to the end. When the beads hit the middle of the paper bowls, the drum will sound.
Lastly, we hot glued a popsicle stick to the base of the drum. This is our handle (or drum stick) that will play the drum when twisted back and forth.
We enjoyed making our drums and were eager to play them. All the children had a chance to play their drums when Ms. Didavi put on some music and the children danced and played along.
