Lesson 52B - Sunset Watercolor 2

This is the continuation of the lesson we began a few weeks ago. Summarizing our last lesson, we used various watercolor techniques to learn how to render a sunset sky. The children were able to practice two different techniques - dry watercolor on wet paper; and wet (or tube) watercolor on dry
paper. They also learned how to best use their brush technique to render a “striped” or layered sky.

Today we completed our painting by adding our silhouettes. These were cut out of dark colored construction paper. We mainly used black, dark blue, and purple.  Many children chose to add tree silhouettes.  Some children also asked to add bridges, cats, pumpkins and houses to complete their pictures. They glued these on the sunset paper we made last week. Next, the children embellished their pictures. Many chose to add color by drawing windows on their houses, or adding spiders hanging from the trees. We used oil pastels to add details to the pictures, and the results speak for themselves. All the pictures were bright, lively, and beautiful.
