Lesson 38 - Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! Earth day was this past Tuesday, April 22. In recognition of this special day, we talked about the meaning of earth day and the reasons why it is so important. We looked at pictures of our planet, as well as pictures of man’s mistreatment of the earth. We were also reminded that we all live on the earth together and share responsibility for its upkeep, by recycling, conservation and taking care of endangered species among other things.

We looked at many pictures of our beautiful earth as seen from space.

For our project we made a mobile copy of our globe by using shaving cream (yes really!), paint, and cardstock paper cutouts.

We began by taking pre-cut oval shapes for the earth. We then sprayed shaving cream into a pan to which we added our earth colors (blue, white, green and a bit of brown). Each child took a pencil and mixed the colors around blending them  just enough to create a swirl effect.

We then took our globe and place it on the shaving cream/paint mixture and very gently pressed down. This was left to dry for approximately ½ hour. When our ‘earth’ was dry, the excess shaving cream was removed, leaving behind the swirled colors on our globe. This truly looked like the earth as seen from space. Our final task was to punch a hole at the top and add a string. These mobiles can be taped to a window or anywhere you wish as a reminder of our home and our interdependence on one another.
